March 29, 2022 - In the eco-action of cleaning Medvednica, organized by the Public Institution Nature Park Medvednica on Saturday, March 26, 250 volunteers removed more than 30 tons of bulky waste from nature during five hours.
This is a traditional action organized this year on the occasion of World Forest Day (March 21) and World Water Day (March 22). Actions are organized every year with the primary goal of removing and disposing of waste and educating the public about the need for a conscientious attitude towards nature.
However, according to the participants, the amount of waste that the volunteers found last Saturday in the Medvednica Nature Park surprised everyone. Namely, four locations of illegal landfills were cleaned: Kustošija macadam, Zelena magistrala (Green highway), Sopot waterfall ramp and Ponikve Donja Podgora in Donja Stubica.
Almost 25 tons of waste dumped in nature were removed from the Zagreb side of Medvednica, mostly along the macadam, where volunteers pulled waste from the slopes to the macadam road along the entire location. It was really a lot of different waste - from construction waste, discarded tires, old furniture, parts of the wreckage to a large amount of plastic canisters, metal bins and other waste that has no place in nature.
This year, the Zagreb Holding supported the campaign by ensuring the removal of bulky waste by Čistoća trucks, and many volunteers were joined by about twenty employees of the Zagreb Holding - from Zrinjevac, Čistoća and Zagreb goods Terminal and colleagues from the City Pharmacy Zagreb.
Such a large amount of waste dumped in nature indicates the need to spread awareness of the importance of nature conservation and further educate the public about the need for conscientious disposal of waste.
